In a totally WTF moment today Foxconn, makers of pretty much every electronic device that Americans buy up quickly under different brand names, announced that they will be entering the mobile gaming market.
It’s understandable really that Foxconn wants to exit the space they are in now, making things for others for very limit profit margin, and enter into higher profit sectors like product design and sales under their own brand name. The idea that they can enter into the mobile gaming market with little experience is a lofty goal to say the least.
Most troubling is the reputation Foxconn has made for itself with sweat shop workers and suicide nets around buildings. Despite the fact that each year Foxconn manufactures millions of the most popular electronic devices in the world they have one of the worst public reputations out of any electronic company that comes to mind.
Public perception wise they’d probably rank lowest in everything if some poll scientists did a poll, ranking somewhere under “whoever in Taiwan makes that random transistor in my alarm clock” and “the chinese manufacturer that puts secret wifi hacking chips into everything sold at Walmart”. PR is not a thing that is on the side of Foxconn, and it will be interesting to see what happens when they eventually launch on the mobile devices.
