7.6 million, or over 10% of Steam’s 65 million users logged in on Sunday December 29th. This is a new record for the service which just about a month earlier smashes its previous record with 7.3 million concurrent users.
The Steam Winter Sale 2013 brought a lot of great deals and even a totally free copy of Left 4 Dead 2, but it also managed to show some weakness in the armor of Steam’s server infrastructure. During the free game giveaway the service was down for huge periods of time and likely delayed the record breaking login by a few days. Had Steam kept up with the overwhelming demand who knows who high the new record would have been.
Regardless, it’s a tremendous record for an established service over a holiday weekend.
