In a recent announcement on the Steam Universe group on Steam, Valve announced a revision to the expected release date for their upcoming Steam Machines. Instead of a 2014 release window Valve is now shooting for a 2015 release. This updated schedule gives them additional time to perfect their in-house controller design in hopes of ensuring that it offers the best experience possible.
We’re now using wireless prototype controllers to conduct live playtests, with everyone from industry professionals to die-hard gamers to casual gamers. It’s generating a ton of useful feedback, and it means we’ll be able to make the controller a lot better. Of course, it’s also keeping us pretty busymaking all those improvements. Realistically, we’re now looking at a release window of 2015, not 2014.
One consequence of this delay will inevitably be need to revise the hardware specs of the Steam Machines already announced by vendors. While no vendors have released any info just yet, 2015 is a long way away for that hardware to stay relevant.
