Valve released their community driven Steam Reviews system into open beta today. The system builds upon the user recommendation system that was added to Steam in 2010. Now any Steam user may review any game you’ve played on steam (even if you haven’t purchased it), read other users reviews, and comment on any review for any game. This data will be shown alongside the Metacritic score on the games store page.
While there are likely to be some changes down the road to the system it’s an exciting addition to Steam and should help give users a much clearer idea of what they have in store for them when making a purchase. Buggy or simply bad games will likely be unable to avoid the scorn of the potential millions of Steam users.
Assuming this Steam Reviews system catches on in popularity (which is very likely will) there is now a real serious motivation for developers to make the best game possible if they want to see steady sales on Steam.
