Logitech’s latest entry in the gaming hardware market is the G402 Hyperion Fury. Featuring 8 programmable buttons, an ARM processor, and their proprietary Fusion Engine, Logitech claims to have created the fastest gaming mouse in the world. After a few weeks of daily use, Gamecrastinate takes a look at how this mouse stacks up for home, work, and play.

The G402 Hyperion Fury came in a compact package and without an install disk of any sort. Instead, Logitech included a slip of paper that points users towards their support website where they can find the aptly named Logitech Gaming Software. Having plugged in the mouse and selected the right combination of software, in this case Windows 8 64-bit, I was ready to explore all that the G402Hyperion Fury had to offer.

While crunching numbers in benchmarks, performing side by side comparisons, and weighing various mice on a scale might be the standard fare of hardware review sites, these are details that the average gamer isn’t terrible concerned about. If you’re the kind of person that needs that exact information for shaming your poor friends, there are plenty of places on the web to satisfy that need. At Gamecrastinate, we’re interested in how a device works for the average gamer. More often than not, this is a person that drops $60 on a mouse because they are hoping that it performs better than their previous mouse at everyday tasks, not because it benchmarks well or weighs 2 grams less than another brand’s device.

Following that viewpoint, we found that the G402 far exceeded our expectations. Using the G402’s Logitech Gaming Software, I was able to easily configure the mouse to my personal preferences. The G402 offers a DPI range between 240 – 4000, and over 500 IPS thanks to the Fusion Engine. Using the Logitech Gaming Software’s integrated speedometer, moving the mouse as frantically as possible resulted in me maxing out around 99 IPS with the Fusion Engine off, and 150 IPS with the Fusion Engine on. With a claimed maximum of over 500 IPS, I came to the sobering conclusion that the mouse in front of me was quite possibly 5x more precise than the hand that controlled it. It would seem that the robotic revolution has arrived at my doorstep in the form of a pointing device.

In my eyes, the benchmarks numbers for a mouse could very well be reduced down to a simple binary value. Can the mouse respond to movements as fast as you can do them? Yes=1, No=0. For our binary test, the G402 scores a perfect 1 out of 1. It’s much faster than your fleshy human arm, and can do whatever you do on a flat mousepad surface, just better. I have trouble envisioning many scenarios where a gamer of any skill level would require a mouse that performs outside of the G402’s capabilities.

The Logitech Gaming Software (LGS for short) features a clean and highly functional UI design that should make it simple for first-time gaming mouse owners to get up to speed. Novices can quickly configure basic settings such as DPI values or single profile button settings, while advanced users can dive into application-based profiles and complex macros.

The LGS’ menu at the bottom offers users 6 simple options. Home, Customize buttons, Customize pointer settings (DPI), Customize lighting, Fusion Engine settings, and Settings (general). By separating the options into categories like this, users of all comfort levels should be able to easily navigate the options and utilize the software to the fullest capability.

As far as macros go, the LGS leaves nothing to be desired. Users should be able to do pretty much anything they want with the macro system. By checking a box in the settings, users can also instruct the macro system to obey input delays, which could allow for more complex commands for some games. The software also allows for application-based profiles for commands and DPI settings, although it’s possible that many gamers will adopt a one-size-fits all mentality when it comes to DPI settings. Finally, much like Razer Synapse software, Logitech Gaming Software supports keyboard functions as well. Users will be able to increase the overall functionality of their PC with the added ability to create keyboard macros, even if they don’t own a Logitech keyboard.
