For us Diablo 3 quickly turned into a game about saving gold and buying the best items on the auction house instead of trying to find the best items in dungeons. It’s almost sad that the style of auction house based gameplay seemed to be entirely by design and unfortunately for Blizzard that plan backfired big time.

RPS: What if people don’t want to commit to a community? What if they just want to play the game?

Martens: We didn’t make that game. That’s the straight-up answer. We did not make that game, and we’re not going to turn this game into that game. We have the online mode because we learned a lot over the many, many years that Diablo II was in development.

That was the wrong choice to allow people to play offline, and we still stand by that. And we think Internet access is widespread. If someone has no Internet access, then yeah, Diablo III is not the game for them.

“If I let you use the controller on the PC, then I have to let you use the user interface that goes with it, and if I give you the roll and I haven’t throttled the number of enemies attacking you because the mouse-and-keyboard players can handle all those enemies, but with a controller you have too many guys,” Berger added.

When you think about it one of the things that Diablo players loved about the series and wanted to see more of in Diablo 3 is frantic widespread battles with dozens of enemies. Slowing that down for PC players would likely be a step in the wrong direction that the loyal original fans of the series might find insulting.

Less is sometimes more, and in this case no controller support for PC might be a seriously good decision.
